What’s in Season at Hudson Valley Farmers Markets This Summer?

The Hudson Valley growing season runs roughly from May through November. Here is what to expect on the tables each month.

May

Asparagus, ramps, rhubarb, baby greens, radishes, scallions, spring onions, pea shoots, microgreens, sorrel. Spring transplant flowers. Maple syrup carries over from spring season.

June

Strawberries (the Beacon Sloop Club Strawberry Festival is June 14), sugar snap peas, snow peas, garlic scapes, lettuces, spinach, scapes, the first summer squash, the first cucumbers, fresh herbs. Lamb at meat-vendor stands.

July

Sweet corn (the first of the season usually appears the week of July 4), tomatoes, blueberries (the Ellenville Blueberry Festival is August 8), raspberries, cherries, peaches, blackberries, bell peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, beans. The Black Dirt onions come on hard mid-July.

August

Peak everything. Heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, peaches, plums, eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, summer squash. The Bagel Festival in Monticello on August 9 and Hudson Valley Ribfest August 16-18 are both peak-market weekends. This is the month to make pesto, can tomatoes, and freeze corn.

September

Apples start showing up the second week (Hudson Valley apple country runs through Warwick, Highland, Marlboro, and Milton). First winter squash, pumpkins, late tomatoes, brussels sprouts, kale, hard cider on the cidery side.

First-Time Visitor Tips for Hudson Valley Farmers Markets

Arrive early. Berries, baked goods, and the most photogenic tomatoes sell out by 11 a.m. on Saturdays. If you want to browse without crowds, get there in the first 30 minutes.

Bring cash and a reusable bag. Most vendors accept Venmo or card, but cash speeds the line. Bring your own bag (the canvas tote you forgot in your car counts).

Most Hudson Valley markets accept SNAP/EBT and many participate in Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB), which matches SNAP dollars up to a daily cap. Check at the manager’s booth at the entrance.

Bring a cooler if you’re driving more than 30 minutes home. The summer heat is real and the meat, dairy, and berries you just bought need it.

Talk to the farmer. Ask what’s peaking this week. Ask what to do with the unfamiliar vegetable. Ask about the farm. This is half the reason these markets exist.

Most markets are dog-friendly but check the manager’s booth if you’re unsure. Bring water and watch for dropped food.
